Thermofoil Cabinets

Thermofoil cabinets are an excellent option that is available for those who are looking to update their kitchen with a new fresh look. Because of its strong vinyl surface, thermofoil is durable and can be a less expensive choice compared to many of the real wood options. Thermofoil has a high quality seamless look that is complimented with an easy to clean smooth surface. And, they are available in many designs, styles, and colors to fit any theme. If you are thinking about replacing your current cupboards, then thermofoil cabinets may be a good fit for you.

They are made by covering a medium density fiberboard or particle board material with a vinyl surface. First, the door panel is cut out of engineered wood to form the appropriate recessed design. Then the selected vinyl sheet is attached to the panel with an adhesive using a vacuum press and heat to fully dry the glue. If it is properly cared for it will be durable and retained its new look for many years. This means that you will save both the time and the expense of having to refinish or paint them all in the future.

Styles of Thermofoil

A thermofoil door can be created to simulate a wood grain stained or natural finish look to modular cupboards. The authenticity is accomplished by mirroring the grain of several typical wood types such as oak, maple, birch, cherry, and mahogany to name a few. And to further the natural look, the grain also may be going in many different directions as well. There are many options of wood types available ranging from light woods like maple or birch to dark woods like cherry or mahogany.

These cabinets also come in non wood finishes with various shades of white, cream, black, or even aluminum. And, there are many available designs to choose from including a basic flat panel or a great selection of multi layered recessed panels. You can also choose from a matte or glossy finish too. And there are additional designer choices available to add including glazing, crown moldings, and patterns. Because there are many choices available, you can piece together the finish, panel type, and panel design to create a semi custom look for your space.

The Benefits

Thermofoil cabinets are smoother than most painted wood surfaces and are also seamless so they have the appearance of an authentic wood door. Overtime, real wood cabinets will expand and contract which can cause cracks to form in the painted or finished surface. And, a painted surface will chip as well which taints the quality of the overall look. But, a thermofoil surface is much more durable over time as it will not crack or chip so you do not have the need to repaint or refinish the surface again. And, because of the smooth surface, thermofoil cabinets are easy to clean with soap and water but you may also use most mild household cleaning products on them.

It used to be that thermofoil cabinets were viewed simply as the inexpensive alternative to real wood cabinets. However, this is no longer the case. Thermofoil cabinets are made for both the budget conscious and the consumer that desires high quality cabinets that will last for years to come. The price of the cabinets varies with how the product is made. Generally speaking the materials that are used to create the underlying panel that is covered by the vinyl affects the cost of the final product.

Proper Installation

Thermofoil cabinets are installed the same way that standard wood ones are installed. However, be sure to discuss the manufacturer installation recommendations with your contractor prior to installation. It is much more durable when not directly exposed to extreme heat as extreme heat can cause the vinyl layer to separate from the underlying panel. Because of this, when installing them next to appliances like a self cleaning oven, there is a specific way it should be done in order to ensure the long term durability of the product. And, proper installation means that the manufacturer's warranty will also remain valid for the life of the warranty.

Thermofoil cabinets are such a popular choice because they are an affordable and durable alternative to wood grain or painted wood cabinets and have a high quality look to them. And, there is a vast selection of finishes, designs, and glazes to choose from. Thermofoil is very durable as it does not chip or crack like paint. Because of their durability and broad range of designs and finishes, they can also be installed in your bathroom or garage as well. Before making your final selection, talk to your contractor or cabinet maker to discuss the possibility of installing thermofoil cabinets as they are a great alternative to wood.
