Cabinet Refinishing

Cabinet refinishing is an excellent way to create a great new look in the kitchen without actually having to go out and spend thousands of dollars on new cabinets. New cupboards are beautiful and they look great in kitchens, but they are so expensive to purchase that many of us simply can't afford them. Well, the truth is that in most cases they are also not necessary at all. In fact, in the vast majority of cases even cabinetry that looks like it has seen better days can be refurbished to look as good as new again.

Cabinet refinishing is a significant and growing sector of the overall cabinet market. Refinishing cabinets is a perfect way to get more use out of what you have and to get more mileage out of the money you spend on home improvement. Think about it: if you spent good money on some premium semi custom cabinetry when your home was built and you're now just going to throw them away, doesn't that somehow feel like a waste of money? Cabinet refinishing is a great option for any cupboard set that is structurally sound and that needs little or no repair to get in good shape to do the job.

Refinishing Options for Cabinets

There are some different ways that discount cabinets can be refinished, and different options that consumers can choose to go with to help them get this job done. In the first and most basic and inexpensive option, we simply take the cabinet and paint it. This is a very straightforward job but it may not be as simple as you think to get the right result. Doors and drawer fronts as well as hardware and any accessories need to be removed. In some cases, as with all refinishing jobs, the doors and drawer fronts will actually be replaced with new ones if their condition justifies it.

The key to this job is in the surface preparation. First the gloss finish must be somewhat roughed up to bring out the porousness in the material to help it adhere better to the primer coat. Use a medium grit sanding block and go over all surfaces to be sanded and really make sure to do a good, even job. Next, primer is applied, and sanding is repeated. Don't worry about rubbing off primer during this process because a second light coat is recommended anyway. This alternating process is repeated as the paint is applied with the sanding blocks heading from medium to very fine grit. There are a few reasons for doing this: surface adhesion between coats and a smooth finish with no brush marks. Each coat should be applied lightly, just enough to cover the surface every time.

Stripping and Refacing Cabinet Boxes

There are some other great cabinet refinishing options in addition to painting. You could choose to strip and reapply the stain, for example, trying for a similar color match or going darker if you like. Opting for a lighter shade is also possible but not as easy to do unless the stripping job goes perfectly, which is hard to accomplish in cabinet refinishing. These and the other options for refinishing cupboard sets are also inexpensive ways to update the bathroom or even the garage cupboard set.

Refacing the cabinet is somewhat similar to stripping but different in the sense that rather than subtracting the old finish, we are sort adding to it. New doors and drawer fronts are fairly standard in this type of job. Refacing primarily involves applying a high quality veneer to the boxes and frames at all visible exterior points and matching up some new doors and drawer fronts in solid wood, and also replacing hardware and accessories to finish out the look. Quality cabinet maker material is quite affordable for all these jobs, especially when compared to the cost of replacement units.

In most cases these last two cabinet refinishing jobs are left to specialists in the refinishing industry. Many people also have pro painters help them with refinishing paint jobs for the best possible results.
