Cabinet Refacing

Cabinet refacing is one of several resurfacing options that homeowners have as alternatives to full replacement projects. The primary advantage to each of these alternatives is financial in nature. It costs a lot less money to refurbish existing stock and semi custom kitchen cabinets than it does to tear them out and replace them entirely. Among these refurbishing options which also include stripping and restaining as well as painting the outside surfaces of the cupboards, refacing is truly the most attractive choice simply because of the final result. Unlike these other ways we could go with our bathroom cabinets, doing a cabinet refacing job actually results in cabinetry that looks new and that isn't at all reminiscent of the old cabinetry as it existed prior to the job.

Refacing Process Basics

In order to get a better idea of whether this kitchen cabinet refinishing option is right for you, it is necessary to understand exactly what is involved in the process, and what it is about that process that makes this different from just applying a coat of paint or stripping and staining the boxes and doors. At the beginning of the project the doors and the drawer faces are removed and any extraneous hardware and accessories as well, leaving only the boxes, frames, and any end panels and filler pieces. The visible exterior faces of the cabinet units are then fitted with a wood veneer finish to create a whole new look and style for the cabinet set. This includes those end panels and any other pieces used to coordinate with the cabinetry, such as dishwasher panels boxing it in if it appears at the end of a row of base cabinets under a countertop.

It is possible to reuse doors and drawer fronts at this point to create a contrast in color and finish, something that some new designs actually go for these days. But in most cabinet refacing jobs, the door and drawer front materials are replaced with brand new ones, and the hardware and accessories such as door handles are also replaced. Again, there are a few different ways this can be done in terms of style. One way to go is to find materials that most closely match the veneer. But another way to do things is to go in the completely opposite direction and consciously create a color contrast of lights on darks or opposing grain patterns. This can help turn the resultant product into something entirely unique, obviously an appealing attribute for most of us.

Advantages of Refacing Cabinets

It is great to get brand new materials from a custom cabinet maker and have them installed in the garage or basement, but not everyone has the budget set aside for that. So, one of the main benefits of this cabinet refacing option is its cost. Cabinet refacing is highly affordable, with an average price that is only a fraction of that of new installs. Refacing gives us a way to do something new without that high new cupboard price. It puts the job within the budgetary range of many more people across the country, those of us who just could not swing the cost of completely new kitchens no matter how great of a financing offer we received.

Cabinet refacing is also nice for the fact that it is much simpler and a faster project than a total tear out. In many cases installation techs won't even require their customers to clear out the cabinet areas before they begin the project. This is much more convenient than the situations where we basically live without our kitchens and are at the mercy of the installers until the removal of the old units and installation of the new are finished. Cabinet refacing, then, is just a lot more convenient than full out replacements. This means that we can get the job done for less money and do it with a lot less of an interruption to our daily routines.

Refacing Cabinets for Less

Refacing the cabinet set in any room of the home and not just kitchens is a way to hold down the cost of a remodel without compromising its visual impact. In the master suite upstairs, for example, you might want to look into cabinet refacing to go with the installation of new tile floors and a toilet as a way to dress up the powder room for a very affordable overall cost. There are plenty of ways to update cupboards without spending a mint to do it, and this is one of the best ways of all because it provides a totally new skin for the materials and doesn't just cover the old with paint or some other substance.
